(have not checked other sources) Although this document is not meant to be a guide to pronunciation, I provide some comments, which are based on information from Bachman's book. A line over the top of a vowel (a, i or u) indicates that the vowel is held for double value. So in the word asana, which always has a line over the first a, that a is held for twice the length of the other a's. There are some subtle nuances in the pronunciation of Sanskrit, such as an s with a dot under it or an s with an accent over it. These both indicate sh sounds, but with slight differences. Those subtleties are beyond what I would attempt to get into here. Bachman's book is intended to provide a thorough reference for the use of Sanskrit in the context of modern yoga asana practice, specifically from the point of view of Ashtanga yoga. As such, this book should be obtained for reference or study by anyone seriously interested in learning Sanskrit pronunciation and spelling pertaining to yoga terminology. In addition to detailed written reference, this book includes CD's which demonstrate correct pronunciation. I am not an authority or expert on yoga or Sanskrit. I have a deep interest in the practice and study of Ashtanga yoga and apparently I'm also a bit of a compulsive list-maker.
