The Flu

Perhaps there will be a vaccine. Note that current vaccine is useless against H5N1 - but still recommended by authorities for 2 reasons - 1- it MAY help a bit anyway and 2 - the more people are vaccinated the less chance of H5N1 and normal flu existing simultaneously in the same person, which greatly increases chance of H5N1 developing ability for human to human transmission. Tamiflu and other prescription medications may be helpful, but they may also be unavailable and H5N1 may be developing resistance. Personally I lean towards alternative medicine and I distrust vaccines.

I suggest take 4 grams (4000mg) or more, up to 100 grams (100 1000mg tablets) per day, of vitamin C if flu is suspected. Other potentially helpful things: fresh garlic, garlic pills, zinc, echinacea, goldenseal, homeopathic remedies (crotalus horridus), colloidal silver, Oscillococinum, neti kriya (washing out sinuses with saline solution), and of course good diet, sleep and exercise (and yoga). Note that there has been some suggestion that while Sambucol (elderberry extract) may be helpful for regular flus, it may make avian flu worse (see med-owl link below). Also, I have not yet studied this, but Vitamin D may be an effective treatment for flus and other viruses.

Note 01/29/09 - I have posted a new page on Garlic as Medicine and am convinced that chopped raw garlic (in suffient quantity - 1-3 BULBs or more per day) is a powerful remedy for flus. Would also suggest combining with echinacea extract (several droppers per day). Smaller amounts (a few cloves per day) may be an effective preventative. Above 2 paragraphs were written in 2005 and may be useful, but as of 2009, I totally recommend garlic as the top remedy to consider for all colds and flus, even (and especially) "killer flu".
