Teachers' Workshops during the school day!
Storytelling Assemblies - Ancient Lore - Science
Facts
Art Activities - Listening - Writing - Thinking
- Learning - Discovering
Our ancestors used stories to teach their children
about the wonders of the Earth and Sky.
Ancient stories can still inspirestudents withwonder
about nature, pique their interest and
start themasking questions which lead into science.
Educators can learn to"story" science facts and history, humanizing the
process of discovery and launching classroomfollow-up activities.

CELEBRATE SCIENCE
-
Celebrate Science is an exciting two-day learning
event for your school, designed to strengthen and integrate science into
your curriculum while supporting your language arts goals. While teachers
receive five hours of in-service workshops, students attend story concerts
and work on special learning activities based on the stories. Parent volunteers
join the celebration by helping in classrooms during the day and attending
the special Family Story Concert held on the evening of the first day.
-
How Does CELEBRATE SCIENCE Work?
-
Day 1 begins with a short assembly introducing Fran & Lynn to
the students. The tellers meet with parent volunteers to show them how
to supervise students in the selected learning activities. Then, while
one storyteller conducts a teacher workshop, the other is performing a
student concert of stories about the sky (sun, moon, stars, weather) or
tales of the earth (animals, plants, land formations). Students not in
the assembly are in their classrooms working on activities based on a story
heard in the morning assembly. Tellers and student groups then switch places
so that all are exposed to this exciting way of learning.
On the evening of the first day, Fran & Lynn offer a free concert of
Family Stories.
Day 2 begins with a briefing of parent volunteers for Day 2's
learning activities. Again students attend story concerts and work on learning
activities, while teachers participate in workshops. At the close of the
school day, Fran & Lynn tell a farewell story to all the faculty and
students.
(NOTE: for small schools, a 1-day version of CELEBRATE SCIENCE
is available.)
-
How can I arrange CELEBRATE SCIENCE for my school?
-
Call to select residency dates and to arrange a meeting with principal,
key teachers, and a parent leader to select learning activities and discuss
logistics, schedules, etc. This planning session is key to the success
of CELEBRATE SCIENCE.
-
Funding Sources
-
Because of its broad and inclusive program elements, CELEBRATE SCIENCE
qualifies for a variety of funding sources that may already be in place
at your school such as: Title I (literacy), Title II (Science), Eisenhower
science grants, Staff Development, Indian Education (Lynn is a registered
citizen of the Chickasaw Nation), and more. Many local civic and social
organizations are also eager to support this project.
