| Actual dart grouping from a 6' .50 cal blowgun @ ~ 30' range |
Blowguns are not toys! They can be surprisingly powerful. Depending upon the gun and skill, a range
of 100 feet or more can be achieved, although my personal experience with a .50 caliber 4 foot blowgun has shown
40 to 50 feet to be about the largest range obtainable with any degree of accuracy. A blowgun can be
a quite lethal weapon at short ranges, especially for smaller birds and animals. They are very inexpensive - usually
less than $20 for a basic model. They are silent and can be used indoors. There are no moving parts to fail. The
standard commercially available darts are reusable and inexpensive should a dart fail or be lost. And they
are quite addictive and fun for simple target shooting. In short, blowguns are just plain fun!
While many sites will say that multi-piece, or break-down, blowguns are fine, I have found it best to avoid any connectors
on the smaller caliber guns. Their connectors provide too much air leakage and unstable alignment. The exception is the
.62 Big Bore connectors which have proven to be quite secure while providing a good air seal. From my experience, a nice
4 or 5 foot blowgun is quite satisfactory for target shooting enjoyment!
